Biography

Fourteen years before the debut

A Los Angeles childhood, a mainstream acting apprenticeship and a career that only started at thirty-five.

Kiara Mia was born Deanne Munoz in Los Angeles on 20 May 1976. Her father was an abusive alcoholic and her mother stayed in the marriage; she has spoken about a childhood dominated by fear and about the relief that came when her younger brother was born and the violence stopped. The household was born-again Christian, and she has described her parents as loving when sober. The contradictions of that home are part of how she tells her own story.

The ambition arrived early. She wanted to be an actress or a model, and her mother put her in acting classes at fourteen. She kept going into her twenties, picked up a commercial agent and a theatrical agent, and worked at the craft rather than waiting for a discovery. The auditions ran into the hundreds.

The mainstream credits are real but scattered: commercials for Dodge and PBS, music videos for Baby Bash, Frankie J and Lil Rob, and a part in Harsh Times, David Ayer's first film as a director, starring Christian Bale and Eva Longoria. She has described walking that red carpet as a high point. A promised role in Ayer's next film fell through at the last moment, and the disappointment pushed her to reconsider the path.

She entered adult film in 2011, at thirty-five. The first scenes were solo and girl-girl, a softer entry than the boy-girl work that followed in 2012. The studios that booked her were mainstream adult companies: Evil Angel, Wicked Pictures, Elegant Angel, Zero Tolerance, Diabolic Video and Bang Productions, among others. The appeal was partly financial and partly practical: a way to make a living in front of a camera after years of almost.

The industry recognition came in 2015 with an AVN nomination for MILF/Cougar Artist of the Year. The category fit the career: she had entered at an age when many performers are already retiring, and the work leaned into that rather than hiding it. She has said she expected to do adult film for four or five years and get out; the run has lasted much longer.

Today the career runs across film, her own website and a large social media following, with millions of Instagram followers and a presence on the subscription platforms. She remains active and has described herself as a businesswoman as much as a performer: the brand, the site and the audience are all part of the same project that began with a girl from Los Angeles who wanted to be watched.
